Term 4: Gymnastics to Music Lesson 3

The pupils took part in their third lesson of Term 4 at Northgate Primary on the 21st March 2011. The third lesson was focusing on the learning the key skills and qualities needed to create a gymnastics routine including flight and rolls to music.

The pupils took part in a warm-up activity to raise their HEART RATE and to PREPARE themselves for the activities ahead.
The stretches performed were;

Quadricep (STRETCH OF THE WEEK)
Hamstring
Gastrocnemius
Tricep
Deltiod

We recapped last week’s lesson and in groups the pupils worked together adding in the 1 and 2 point balances to link, balance, a travel with smooth transition and control. Here are a few photos;

The groups remained the same and the emphasis on the lesson was the precision of starting and finishing position of every move. The pupils were shown a video of their gymnastic performance that occured in Term 2. While watching the video, for the first time i asked them the following questions;

1. Does this routine have a start and a end position?
2. Does the performers have quality? control? body tension?

Now i played the music over the video and explained to the group and asked them;

3. What is the difference between this video with music and your performances?

The pupils stated that the performances must be in time with the music whether it is fast or slow or a mixture. The pupils also realised that the performances were using balances and rolls but remebering they must have;
- Control
- Body Tension
- Quality

The groups then moved back into their groups and the task was for them to create a new routine to the instrumental of 'Rihanna - Only Girl in the World', which had a mixture of slow and fast beats.
Again the main emphasis was on the start and finishing position of their performances.

At the end of the lesson, two groups performed to the rest of the group and selected pupils were given a question to answer;
1. Did they have a start and finish position?
2. Was the performance in time with the music?
3. Did they have control? Body Tension? Quality?
4. Which performance did you like and why?

The pupils enjoyed learning and the activities that they took part in! Well done to everybody in the class for the effort and attitude towards the lesson!

The group then moved into their first task.The group were divided into 5 teams of 6, the set up can be seen below;

One pupil from each team would perform the task to the coloured cone and then return back to their team. The next person would then go after being tagged by their team mate. Each team would complete the task once and then they would be sat down in a straight line quietly (this would be the signal for me to know that they were finished).
Here are the activities that were completed;

1 legged jumps?

QUESTIONS:
To perform a successful jump, what must the jump have?
Is it better to jump with 1 or 2 legs?

The groups then completed the following activities;
- Jumping with arms behind their backs.
- Ski Slalom Jumps
- Reach for the sky jumps

QUESTIONS:
Which actvitity was the hardest to perform? and why?
What parts of the body do we use to help us jump?

To progress the task a ball was introduced and to encourage two-legged jumps, here are the activities completed;
- Jumping with a netball between their legs.
- Jumping with a american football between their legs.

Two legged jumps but now focus on keeping the ball off the floor!

To finish off the relay races became competitive, a selection of photos can be seen below from the lesson;

Air time from an excellent two-legged jump!
