Term 4: Athletics Jumping Week 3 and 4

Jumping  Week 3:

The learners took part in their third lesson on Athletics at Northgate Primary on the 6th of June 2011. The third lesson was focusing on the learning the key skills and qualities needed to ‘Jump’.
The learners took part in a warm-up activity to raise their HEART RATE and to PREPARE themselves for the activities ahead.
The stretches performed were;
Quadricep
Hamstring
Gastrocnemius
Tricep
Deltiod
To start off the group looked at using different jumping combinations to move around a space. The game is called 'Spot to Spot' (See set up below)

Learners then in pairs find a cone to start at and learners;
-          Step from a single cone to another of a different colour.
-          Hop from one cone to another of the same colour.
-          Jump to double cones.
-          When the learners arrive at two same coloured cones side by side the learners perform a two footed landing.

After that task, the group were then asked;
Q. How do we jump? What body parts are we using?
Key Teaching Points:
- Land on a flat foot
- Use your arms to balance
- Take off from the ball of the foot
Learners then created their own circuit or route using the different coloured cones. Using single cones and double cones. The learners were told;
1. The start and finish must be in the same place.
Once the learners had created their circuits, the learners then rotated around to experience another groups circuit. Rotations continued until groups arrived back at their Circuit.

Each group were then given a white board to record the results for their time trials at their circuit.
Rules:
1. Each team member must complete the circuit and then tag their partner.
2. Bonus points are collected if the time trial is completed successfully.
3. The LAST person will be the assessor for the 1st runner and will give a TICK if completed successfully or a CROSS if unsuccessful. The 1st Runner would then become the assessor for the 2nd and the 2nd for the 3rd.

When the group had completed their trials, in their groups they think about their time trial results and discuss;
-          Which circuit had the quickest time trial? Why?
-          Which circuit did you as a group like? Why?
Groups then pair up with another group and compare results.

The pupils enjoyed learning and the activities that they took part in! Well done to everybody in the class for the effort and attitude towards the lesson!!

Jumping Week 4:

The learners took part in their second lesson on Athletics at Northgate Primary on the 13th of June 2011. The fourth lesson was focusing on the learning the key skills and qualities needed to ‘Jumping’ and developing the learning from the last lesson.
The learners took part in a warm-up activity to raise their HEART RATE and to PREPARE themselves for the activities ahead.
The stretches performed were;
Quadricep
Hamstring
Gastrocnemius
Tricep
Deltiod

The first task was for the learners to recap last week by Hopping and Jumping with balance and speed. The task was called 'SWAP' (See setup below);

Learners are placed into groups of four with the teams sitting opposite each other. On command the learners moved from one side to the other and counting how many Hops or jumps it takes;
- Hopping with the left foot
- Hopping with the right foot
- Jumping

After completing the task once through, the group were asked;

Q. How can we lower the number of hops or jumps it takes to get to the other side?
Q. What helps us to Hop or Jump over a greater distance?
Q. How do you know which leg is stronger hopping?
Q. Which leg was the strongest, your left or right?

The group repeated the task but this time the learners could choose which leg they wanted Hop on and concentrating on speed.

Each team went through 4 times.
1st time through they hopped
2nd time through Jumping
3rd time through they hopped
4th time through jumping

The group then moved onto the next task called 'Head, Shoulder, Hips, Knees and Toes' (Setup can be seen below).

The learners stayed in the same groups and each had a different coloured cone that represented a different part of the body.

WHITE = Toes
RED = Knees
YELLOW = Hips
GREEN = Shoulders
BLUE = Head

The tallest learner in the group laid on the floor and placed the cones next to a different part of the body.

The learner behind the jumper was given a bean bag and they would place the bean bag at the body part they would jump to. Each learner would have one jump and then move to the back of the line.

Key Teaching Points:
1. Lean forward when you take off and move your body quickly forwards with two feet.

The learners would go through the group 5 TIMES (Jumping to each body part). After, completing the whole body the learners can then nominate a body part.
The pupils enjoyed learning and the activities that they took part in! Well done to everybody in the class for the effort and attitude towards the lesson!

The next activity for the next two weeks is Throwing!

Term 4: Athletics Running Week 1 and 2

Running Week 1:
The learners took part in their first lesson on Athletics at Northgate Primary on the 9th of May 2011. The first lesson was focusing on the learning the key skills and qualities needed to ‘Run’.

The learners took part in a warm-up activity to raise their HEART RATE and to PREPARE themselves for the activities ahead.
The stretches performed were;

Quadricep

Hamstring

Gastrocnemius

Tricep

Deltiod
To start off the group looked at running with a good posture. The learners moved into pairs and started to jog around inside the coned area (See Below).

On the command ‘run high’ learners assume a tall body position as they run;
Key Teaching Points:
-      On the balls of the feet
-      Picking feet up high
-      Head held high
On the command ‘run low’ learners run in a crouched position;

Key Teaching Points:
-      Flat feet
-      Head low

The commands were then called out randomly by a Learner (Non participant) for the whole group.

After that task, the group were then asked;
Q. What are the differences when running tall and running low?
Q. Why is it important to run tall?

The group then in their pairs took it in turns to call out the commands for their partner. The additional commands were added in;
-      Walk
-      Jog
-      Skip
The group then progressed onto the next task called ‘Gears’, to allow the learners to adjust running pace smoothly, accelerate and decelerate rapidly. The set up for the task can be seen below;

I explained that each cone represented a different gear;

-      Red cone = Walking

-      Green cone = Jogging

-      White cone = Striding

-      Yellow cone = Sprinting

Learners moved into groups of four and began moving at the correct pace depending on which gear is called out. When a gear is called out the first learner moves to the cone and when that learner reaches the cone, the next learner goes until the whole team has been.

The commands were then called out randomly by a Learner (Non participant) for the whole group.

Mid way through the task, the learners were asked;
Q. What do the gears represent?
Q. Why do we have different types of movement?
Q. What other body parts help us run?

Key Teaching Points:
-      Change your arm speed and your leg speed

The group then moved back to their stations and now the learners called out their own gears within the group. For example, one learner is the starter and calls out the gears for the learner.
At the end of the lesson, the group were asked;
Q. What helps us run successfully?
Q. Why is it important to run tall?
Q. Why do we have different gears when we run?
Q. When using the gears was it hard moving through the gears? Why?

The pupils enjoyed learning and the activities that they took part in! Well done to everybody in the class for the effort and attitude towards the lesson!

Running Week 2:

The learners took part in their second lesson on Athletics at Northgate Primary on the 16th of May 2011. The second lesson was focusing on the learning the key skills and qualities needed to ‘Run’ and developing the learning from the last lesson.

The learners took part in a warm-up activity to raise their HEART RATE and to PREPARE themselves for the activities ahead.
The stretches performed were;

Quadricep

Hamstring

Gastrocnemius

Tricep

Deltiod
The first task was for the learners to experience running fast over short distances and showing awareness of others around them. The task was called ‘Shark Tag’ and the set up can be seen below;

Four learners were nominated to play the role of sharks that can move anywhere between the Islands (mats) but they are not allowed on them. All other learners were asked to start on any island they wanted to within the selected area. On the command of ‘Abandon the island!’ the learners run to one of the other islands, without being caught by the sharks.

Anyone that is caught then becomes a shark and the game is played until everyone has been caught.

The game was played 3 times with different sharks and the way the learners could travel changed in the second and third game to;

-      Skipping

-      Hopping

Key Teaching Points:
-      Be aware of others around you
-      Keep your weight on the balls of your feet so you can change direction quickly

After the first game, the learners were asked;
Q. Why do we stand on the balls of our feet?
Q. What helps us to get to an island quickly?
Moving on, the group went into pairs to take part in the ‘Shuttle Run’ circuit. The circuit had 10 stations and cones at each station were placed at different distances (See below).

The learners spent working for 10 seconds each and counted how many shuttles they could do in that time. The learners then compared with their partner who got the most at that station. When a station was completed the group then moved on to the next station.

Half way through the task, the learners were asked;
Q. What helps you complete a shuttle as quickly as possible?

Key Teaching Points:
-      Drive your arms hard
-      Forward and back when you accelerate

At the end of the lesson, the group were asked;
Q. What helps you complete a shuttle as quickly as possible?
Q. Why are the shuttle scores different between the group?
Q. What did you decide to do at a station with a big distance?
Q. What did you decide to do at a station with a short distance?

The pupils enjoyed learning and the activities that they took part in! Well done to everybody in the class for the effort and attitude towards the lesson!

The next activity for the next two weeks is Jumping!

Term 4: Gymnastics to Music Lesson 4 & 5

Lesson 4:

The pupils took part in their fourth lesson of Term 4 at Northgate Primary on the 28th of March 2011. The fourth lesson was focusing on the learning the key skills and qualities needed to create a gymnastics routine including balances, flight and rolls to music but now with equipment.

The pupils took part in a warm-up activity to raise their HEART RATE and to PREPARE themselves for the activities ahead.
The stretches performed were;

Quadricep

Hamstring

Gastrocnemius

Tricep

Deltiod

We recapped last week’s lesson and in groups the pupils worked together adding in the 1 and 2 point balances to link, balance, a travel with smooth transition and control. After recapping the skills from last week the pupils were asked;

1. Does your routine have a start and a end position?
2. Do the performers have quality? control? body tension?

Here are a few snapshots;

The groups remained the same and the emphasis on the lesson was to reinforce the use of quality balances but now the groups had a piece of equipment. Each group were given a piece of equipment that was at a different level and the groups had to think about a new way to include a start and finish in their routine thinking of the levels.

The pupils recapped that the performances must be in time with the music and relate to the equipment they have been given whether it is fast or slow or a mixture. The pupils also recapped that the performances were using balances and rolls but remebering they must have;
- Control
- Body Tension
- Quality

The groups then moved back into their groups and the task was for them to adapt their routine to the instrumental of 'Rihanna - Only Girl in the World', which had a mixture of slow and fast beats.
Again the main emphasis was on the quality of balances, start and finishing position of their performances.

At the end of the lesson, two groups performed to the rest of the group and selected pupils were given a question to answer;
1. Did the balances have quality?

2. Did they have a start and finish position?
3. Was the performance in time with the music?
4. Did they have control? Body Tension? Quality?
5. Which performance did you like and why?

The pupils enjoyed learning and the activities that they took part in! Well done to everybody in the class for the effort and attitude towards the lesson!

Next week the groups will be performing their final routines in the final lesson!

Lesson 5:

Competition day for the group and all groups were allocated new apparatus from previous weeks. The groups then had to create a routine that would allow them to use all the moves that they had learnt over the 5 weeks of Gymnastics. Here are a few snapshots;

It was a excellent effort and achievement from all of the pupils throughout Gymnastics. Your grades have been completed and you will get to know them in your next PE lesson

Keep CHECKING the blog to see what we are going to be upto over the next couple of weeks!

Next term the group will be taking part in the 'Pentathlon Challenge' and then completing a unit of work on Athletics.
Looking forward to next term!
