Lesson 5: Hi-Stepper

The pupils took part in their fifth lesson of 2011 at Northgate Primary on the 14th of February 2011. The fourth lesson was focusing on the learning the key skills and qualities needed to take part in the HI-STEPPER. Below are the main Objectives of the lesson.
  • To introduce and reinforce a rhythmical stride pattern related to acceleration and sprint speed.
  • To be able to perform the sprint action through a HI-STEPPER.
  • Explain the importance of lower leg stability and co-ordination in sport and everyday tasks.
  • To be able to work effectively alone and within a team.
The pupils took part in a warm-up activity to raise their HEART RATE and to PREPARE themselves for the activities ahead.

The stretches performed were;
Quadricep
Hamstring (STRETCH OF THE WEEK)
Gastrocnemius
Tricep
Deltiod
The group then moved into their first task. The pupils were asked to get into pairs and number themselves 1 and 2. Number 1's went first and performed sprinting on a spot for 10 seconds, while their partner timed them. After 10 secs, the roles were reversed and this was completed four times each.

QUESTION:
1. How can you increase your speed of your feet when sprinting?
2. What other parts of the body are used when running?

The group were then shown 2 examples of 2 different techniques, sprinting on a spot was then performed for 10 secs and the pupils were asked;
QUESTION:
3. Which one produced the faster feet?
4. Why did 1 score higher than the other?

The pupils then moved back into the task but this time, your partner counts how many times your feet touch the floor in 30 secs.

Using the key teaching points for SPRINTING;
1. Pump arms and opposite knee up aggressively.
2. Keep your body straight and head still.
3. Run on your toes.

Number 1's go first and the the roles are reversed and this was performed 4 times through. Action can be seen below;
                           Pumping of the arms!!
                         Drive the knee up aggressively!!

The group then moved into team relays, and 5 teams were created. The use of the Hi-Stepper and SAQ (Speed, Agility and Quickness) ladders were introduced to the group. The set-up of the relays can be seen below;
1. Short Sprints
2. Hi-Stepper
3. SAQ Ladders (Two feet in each square)
4. Hi-Stepper
5. SAQ Ladders (One foot in each square)

Each team had 5 pupils in and the station was completed twice through by each team. When the pupils complete the station, they sit down in their teams and are ready to be moved to the next station. Action from the relays can be seen below;
Try not to hit the hurdles
Two feet in each and drive the arms!
Motivate and encourage your team's performance!

Each team took part in all stations and to finish off the lesson, the teams then competed against each other.

The pupils enjoyed learning and the activities that they took part in! Well done to everybody in the class for the effort and attitude towards the lesson!
