Last term in PE, the Year 5 pupils at Northgate took part in Gymnastics.
Here are a selection of the key words used throughout the 6 weeks;
The pupils had Six Gymnastics lessons (60 minutes) that were stepping stones for a final group performance in Week Six.
Week 1:
Pupils worked on;
- Control
- Body Tension
- Quality (Straight legs, arms and pointed toes)
Pupils worked individually on travelling around the hall with control (controlling all body parts) and then learning how to do a Pike and a Pencil Roll on mats.
In pairs the pupils then worked together to link, balance, roll, a travel with smooth transition and control.
Week 2:
We recapped last week’s lesson and in pairs the pupils worked together to link, balance, roll, a travel with smooth transition and control.
Pupils worked on;
- Control
- Body Tension
- Quality (Straight legs, arms and pointed toes)
The group were then introduced to 1 and 2 point balances. Allowing the pupils to be creative on the mats in their pairs.
In pairs the pupils then worked together adding in the 1 and 2 point balances to link, balance, roll, a travel with smooth transition and control.
Mirror/cannon/ unison were explained to the pupils and an emphasis was made on starting and finishing positions of their routines.
The pupils performed in their pairs to half of the group, while the other half watched and selected one good point from the performances. After the performances the roles were switched.
Week 3:
Week 3 was the week the apparatus was used to allow the pupils work on different levels (Heights) in gymnastics.
We recapped last week’s lesson and in pairs the pupils worked together adding in the 1 and 2 point balances to link, balance, roll, a travel with smooth transition and control.
The pairs were now combined to make 5 groups of 5/6 pupils. Each group was allocated 3 pieces of apparatus to work on and apply 3, 4 points balances to their routines.
The MAIN objective for the lesson was on the pupils being creative and having quality.
In groups, the pupils then worked together adding in the balances to link, balances, roll, a travel with smooth transition, creativity and control using the apparatus.
The pupils performed in their pairs to half of the group, while the other half watched and selected one good point from the performances. The pupils were then asked to explain their points using gymnastic words (e.g. quality, body tension, control, mirror, canon, unison). After the performances the roles were switched.
Week 4 and 5:
Using the apparatus for Week 4 and 5, it allowed the pupils to reinforce the balances, rolls, travel to create more complex routines by using different pieces of apparatus from the previous weeks.
It was in these weeks we were able to improve on the;
- Middle section of the routine (Balances, rolls, travel)
- Pupils evaluating their own routines and making improvements throughout the lesson.
Assessment for learning was introduced to the group and we played SECRET STUDENT. 1 Student had a white board and while a group was performing, that student selected 1 student to assess. The assessment was to see if all the moves were included in the routine.
Here are a few snapshots below:
E.g.
(A). 1, 2, 3, 4 POINT BALANCES
(B). TRAVEL
(C). ROLL
* If the student enjoyed their routine they got a bonus tick.
After all the performances from the groups, pupils were told that Week 6 will be the competition day and the whole group will be marking your routines.
Week 6:
Competition day for the group and all groups were allocated new apparatus from previous weeks. The groups then had to create a routine that would allow them to use all the moves that they had learnt over the 5 weeks of Gymnastics.
Here are a few snapshots below:It was a excellent effort and achievement from all of the pupils throughout Gymnastics. Your grades have been completed and you will get to know them in your next PE lesson on Monday the 10th of January 2011.
In Term 3 the pupils will be taking part in Sports Hall Athletics.
I am looking forward to Term 3 for more fun, exciting and enjoyable PE lessons.
