Lesson 1: Target Throw (Pentathlon Challenge)

The pupils took part in their first lesson of 2011 at Northgate Primary. The first lesson was focusing on the learning the key skills and qualities needed to take part in the TARGET THROW. Below are the main Objectives of the lesson.

     To demonstrate control and accuracy, with a basic underarm throwing action
     To be able to retrieve and catch a ball with some consistency
     To be able to work effectively alone, with a partner and within a group

The pupils took part in a warm-up activity to raise their HEART RATE and to PREPARE themselves for the activities ahead.
The stretches performed were;
Quadricep
Hamstring
Gastrocnemius
Tricep
Deltiod
QUESTION FOR THE GROUP:
How long was each stretch held for in Seconds? Please comment on this post with your answer.

The group then moved into a competitive team game that allowed them to practise their throwing and catching.

Pupils were placed into 4 teams in the coloured areas (Yellow/ Green/ Blue and Red), one at a time a pupil would run and collect a bean bag from the hoop. The pupil then returned to the group tagging their partner to then run themselves. Aim was to collect as many bean bags as they could in the time given.
Progressions that were made;
1. Throwing line added and the pupils must now throw the bean bag to the next person in line.
- If the bean bag is caught they keep the bag
- If the bean bag is dropped it must be returned
2. Three times through, counting how many each team had at the end.
3. Delaying each team to collect the bean bags (Team that finished 4th now goes first in reverse order)

QUESTION FOR THE GROUP:
What is the best way to catch the bean bag?
How did you throw to your partner?
Why was the team that had the most bean bags the most successful?

Pupils then moved into a individual competition attempting the TARGET THROW EVENT. Here are a few photos of the event below;

Aim and release the bean bag!

Motivate your team mates!

Celebrate your success!

Each student had 3 attempts and then it was the next pupil in line to have a go.
The scoring system was;
- 2 Points if the bean bag lands and stays in the hoop.
- 1 point if the bean bag lands and bounces out of the hoop.

The maximum amount of points you could get was 6 and as a team it was 36.

The pupils enjoyed learning and the activities that they took part in! Well done to everybody in the class for the effort and attitude towards the lesson!

NEXT WEEK we are looking at the ability to BALANCE

Also we will be introducing the STRETCH OF THE WEEK to help us learn the names of the muscles we must stretch before exercise.

Looking forward to Mondays lesson!
