Lesson 1:
At the start of the lesson the pupils watched a clip of Shawn Johnson, an Olympic gymnast perform to music to get the children inspired before creating some of our own sequences.
We focused on
• Getting used to the beat of the music
• Finding space and travelling around the hall in different ways
• Working with a partner, following the leader to different actions
• Emphasis on quality starting position, movement and finishing position.
We then introduced travel into sequences and children explored travelling and balancing to the music. Groups were encouraged to comment on each other’s performances after watching them.
Children did fantastically well and performed some super sequences!
Lesson 2:
We recapped last week’s lesson and in pairs they created different sequences to music.
This time we focused on
• Flight and rolls
• Pair work and group work
Children were then grouped into 4s and had to link their balances. Again quality of performance was encouraged and children used mats to help create their sequences. They had to include a starting and finishing position, 4 different ways of travelling and 2 rolls.
Half the class watched whilst the other’s performed and were asked to evaluate their chosen groups performance – selecting a good point about it. We then linked our sequences together to create a whole class finale.
